whereupon the stone ran away<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0From 18 December 2019 to 30 January 2020, the Gallery of the Association of German Architects (BDA) is showing two current photographic series by the artist and architect Kay Fingerle. The title of the exhibition „whereupon the stone ran away“ <\/strong>refers to the famous Japanese story collection Kojiki, which inspired the Berlin Artist in Residence at the Goethe Institute’s Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto in the summer of 2019.
In the rocks of Nagoya, Kyoto, and Himeji an artificial and independent image of built nature is staged. Kay Fingerle juxtaposes this with spaces built by the French architect Charlotte Perriand, which form an authentic relationship with nature. Perriand’s buildings in Les Arcs from the 1970s bring together the immaculate and sensitive mountain landscape of the french Alps with the emergence of mass tourism. During her stay in Japan in the early 1940s and 1950s, she was particularly interested in traditional houses and their conceptual attachment to nature.
By juxtaposing nature experience and spatial perception in an unusual way, Kay Fingerle mediates between the demarcation from the uncontrollable forces of nature through architecture and the necessary integration of nature into a hostile, because built environment.\u00a0The exhibition is curated by Astrid Bornheim, a member of the curatorial board of the BDA Galerie.<\/p>\n

„The exhibition reflects on the theme of ruins: an allegory for the inexorable passage of time, always uncertain and changeable, disputed between past and future, life and death, destruction and creation, Nature and Culture. The aesthetics of ruins is a crucial element in the history of Western civilisation. The ruin as concept symbolises the presence of the past but at the same time contains within itself the potential of the fragment: a fragment that comes from antiquity, covered by the patina of time, which with its cultural and symbolic implications also becomes a valid \u201cfoundation stone\u201d for building the future. It comes from the past, confers a wealth of meaning on the present and offers an awareness to future projects.“<\/p>\n
